Who do you know?

We’ve all heard the phrase, “It’s not what you know, but who you know”. In the past few weeks, I have been feeling extremely blessed with the people who are in my life. I am surrounded by so many talented people, and guess what? They’re willing to help me on this journey I’m taking.

My life is in transition. For the past ten years I have been a special education teacher but due to my severe latex allergy, I’m no longer safe in a school environment. Until I am able to get an allergen alert service dog, I will have to make some changes to keep myself safe. That means being in a more controlled environment. I have found that at The New Ulm Wellness Collective (The WELL). I began teaching music meditation studio classes at The WELL one year ago. This summer I am expanding my business to include individual music healing sessions. In growing my business, I have had to go through the process of making a website and it was during this process that light was shone on all the amazing people I have in my life.

First, I wanted to revamp my logo so I reached out to my brother, who is a graphic designer. He took my ideas and created a beautiful logo with labradorite in the background. Labradorite is my favorite crystal and has become a reminder to myself that I am strong and have gifts to share with my community. The logo turned out even better than I had imagined. Ross’ creation has depicted an image that almost makes you feel like you’re going inside a guitar and finding peace within it. Through music, comes peace. I think my brother was able to bring that image to life because he is also a musician and understands the power and beauty of music!

Next, I needed some photos of myself to use on the website so I recruited my husband, Ryan, to get out his professional gear and snap some pictures of me. Again, another blessing! I am married to a professional photographer! I don’t necessarily feel comfortable getting pictures taken of myself because like many women, I have body image issues. However, Ryan was able to take pictures that capture the essence of who I am. These are some of the few photos that I like of myself. They’re beautiful! He encouraged me to take more pictures outside than inside. We took advantage of the beautiful mural on The WELL’s wall that was painted by the talented Michael Cimino in memory of my friend, Bliss. As I look back, it’s easy to see that Bliss brought me to The WELL so it’s only right that she’s a part of my promo pics.

If you look at the pictures in my website you may notice that I have a fresh haircut. Again, I’m blessed by the people in my life. I was able to call my mom the night before the photo shoot and say, “Mom, can you cut my hair tomorrow?”. Nothing like waiting for the last minute… but sometimes I work best with a deadline. My mom was able to work me into her schedule and make my hair look presentable again, just in time for the photo shoot! We’ve always joked that the hairstylist’s family members are the last to get a haircut but I’m beginning to realize that my mom is not the one responsible for that. If I would just ask sooner, she would definitely fit me in. She’s amazing! I always enjoy my time in her chair at the beauty shop. It’s thirty minutes that I get to just sit and chat with my mom. I’m always in awe of how she can hold a conversation while cutting hair. That takes talent!

I’m also fortunate to have my colleagues at The WELL who are an inspiration and believe in me. They let me ask all sorts of questions, they give the best hugs, and they’re all the same kind of weird as I am. Hopefully nobody takes offense to that, because I mean it in the best way possible. We are all out-of-the box thinkers and build each other up. We are blessed to have each other and I am looking forward to seeing my colleagues more often as I increase my hours at The WELL.

Then there are the people who are bringing this whole thing together. Foresee Studios has come highly recommended for building a website, and now I see why. I didn’t realize I would have so much fun during this process. Adam has included me in the process of making the website exactly what I need to it be. He is committed to making the page reflect who I am as a person. It’s been cool to see how Adam and Tracy have fine-tuned the website to make sure all aspects tie together nicely and show the viewer my personality. They definitely have the eye for this. Again, the people that are around me are such a gift!

Somehow, I haven’t mentioned my children yet, but they have been great about offering their opinions on all things that involve in my business. They love sharing ideas with me. They’ve also been a great help in making products that will soon be in my Etsy shop.

I have blabbed on and on about all of the great people in my life and am starting to feel like I’m writing an acceptance speech for a GRAMMY. Building my website and expanding my business has given me a moment to pause and reflect on all of the amazing people that I have in my circle. I encourage you to take a moment for yourself to think about the people in your circle. Who do you know? Who has the universe blessed you with, and what gifts do they have to offer the world?
